Wow, what a difference a switch in mediums can make, and not for the better- at least so far. While the important personality bits are there(with some tweaking), the characters, and more specifically the girls, all seem to have gotten a few years younger, and someone also decided that they all needed to be preforming in their best chipmunk voices. The other big sticking point right now is the humor, as it is taking a hugely different course from the absurdist glory of the manga. When they attempt to mimic it, it either falls flat, or they change the best bits, but that’s not the worst of it. No, that honor is reserved for their decision to turn most of the ‘funny’ moments into big-head shouting matches. I normally love the SD, but the way its being done here, from style to writing, to chipmunk voices, just completely fails for me.

There’s some variation to the plot as well, but the core of it, and more importantly, the core idea of the show, are intact (so far), because the overall message is a very good one and definitely worth the praise the series has received. I admit to being a bit curious as to which adheres more closely to its visual novel origins, but despite a strong desire for it to be the manga, I have a feeling that its probably the anime.

Quite a delay since the last one, and I had intended to catch up on that tonight, but unfortunately I can’t seem to stand to listen to those voices for more than a disc at a time, so this will be getting a slower treatment. Perhaps tomorrow night I’ll bring in another show to power through that won’t make my ears bleed.

Another series down, and certainly pleased with how it all turned out. After being scouted by a weekly manga magazine for a professional gig, our lead (who has only been at it for a year and has barely broken past the smallest tier of doujinshi publishing) is quickly swept into a competition for the slot by a fellow creator in his circle of cute girls (who has been at it for some time and is part of one of the larger publishing groups). Succeeding in the challenge, he sets about with his work for the magazine, only to stumble on his way as his close childhood (girl) friend suddenly pulls away. Things are sussed out, success and happiness are in their grasp, and that’s all she wrote. Curious now to see how much of that is covered by the first season of the show, and how quickly it will make me try and get the second.

Through it all, and with the prior volumes, this has really been a story about chasing your dreams, taking challenges to it in stride, and working hard to overcome them while always striving to improve. While its a fairly common trope, and is itself an adaptation of the game, the execution here was nicely done, making for a fun read across the entire run. The last line in the book, “This is only one story of many you’ll find at a doujinshi convention,” really stood out for me, at the same time an acknowledgement of how small it is and an invitation to seek out others, or to even end up with one of your own. Its entirely true too- Genshiken and Welcome to the NHK, two of my favorites, also explore otaku culture with a similar scope, but tell entirely different stories in the process. Additionally, the entire culture surrounding fan interaction with others’ works in Japan truly fascinates me, and is one of the things that I would be most interested in exploring if/when I ever get to Japan (someday I may even do a proper writeup exploring that fascination).

Then we’re on to getting our lead’s proto-Kasukabe girlfriend (yes, I know, completely different creative group than Genshiken, but still) to participate in the next doujinshi event by being their salesgirl (with requisite cosplaying). Lots of the old ultra-violence, a noble sacrifice, and an exploration of the ways fans show their love. Still thoroughly enjoying things, but I’m not coming up with much to say without dragging Genshiken fully into the mix, which I don’t want to do without a fuller examination of the various titles in this vein(which actually sounds like something I want to hash out at some point).

The insanity marches on, as our lead continues to learn the ins and outs of the doujinshi world, finding that its not always successful, and that spurned fans/creators can be really fucking scary. The cast, which seems to keep expanding every few chapters, is working nicely, and the lead actually has a great bit of character building in the second half of the book. Definitely going to be a blast to see some of this animated, might even have to bump the series up in the queue to get to it sooner, but at the least, the manga’s humor is filling a gap in the newly airing shows I’m watching, so that’s good.

For some reason, I thought this was going to be a rather tame series, focused on the crafting of doujinshi with somewhat realistic characterizations. Doujin-making aside, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Opening with a nailbat wakeup call, lots of metal references, and a quick jump into the world of doujinshi convention culture, this is already looking to be one of the faster paced slice-of-life series I’ve come across, with 3 cons attended and 2 1/2 doujins produced by our lead, author Sekihiko Inui’s isn’t giving anyone a moment to catch a breather. Packed full of pop culture references, small parodies and sight gags, absurd violence, and a number of cute girls, this looks like a winner and, if they can keep it up, should prove quite enjoyable when its time to watch the DVDs.
